When Should Kids Learn Python? A Clear Age Guide for Parents
Parents often ask us when kids should learn Python, usually because they've heard it's the most popular programming language in the world. The short answer: usually not before age 10, and here's exactly why.
Why age 10 is the usual starting point
Python is a typed, text-based language. Every command has to be spelled and formatted exactly right, or the programme won't run. For a 7 or 8-year-old who is still building typing speed and reading fluency, this creates frustration that has nothing to do with logic or creativity. That's why younger children start with Scratch's block-based coding instead, with the same problem-solving skills and none of the syntax barrier.
What changes around age 10-13
By the Builders age range, most children have the typing fluency and abstract thinking to handle real syntax. This is when Python becomes not just possible, but genuinely exciting: kids in our Builders track go from Scratch fundamentals straight into their first lines of real Python within a few weeks.
- Ages 7-9: Block-based coding (Scratch), no typing syntax required.
- Ages 10-13: Transition into Python through games and small projects.
- Ages 14-17: Full Python proficiency, often alongside web development and data skills.
What if my child is older and has never coded before?
No problem. A 15-year-old starting from zero moves through the fundamentals much faster than a much younger child would, and can often jump straight into our Teen Track, which is built around exactly this: real skills, real pace, no wasted time on material that's too simple for their age.
